For over three years, ITA International (ITA) has leveraged Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) tools to address complex issues and develop solutions surrounding environmental security. A company whose mission is based on Theodore Roosevelt’s 1910 “In the Arena” speech, ITA is constantly working toward a secure, stable and sustainable world.
“Environmental security is the intersection of global security and environmental issues,” said Mike Melo, chief executive officer, ITA. “For the safety of all people, we must address both the security and sustainability issues together, using a system of systems approach by applying data to drive dialogue and decisions.”
Environmental security initiatives are a safeguard to international security and allow governments to prepare for the impacts of environmental threats by directly addressing the causes. Threats such as water and food security, availability of energy resources, natural disasters and more, often create crisis, instability and conflict. ITA is working to develop customer solutions that reduce or completely prevent these threats by operationalizing data to ensure environmental security and improve the world.
ITA has developed an integrated suite of data analytics tools called The Arena Process. Derived from SBIR Program research, the Arena Process starts with asking the right questions with the intent of fully understanding customers’ needs and objectives todevelop integrated and sophisticated solutions for complex challenges. Currently, ITA is using this process to drive environmental security efforts and develop solutions comprised of subject matter expertise, data analytics and a system of systems approach to build models which evaluate global security, stability operations and sustainability initiatives.
In addition to in house efforts, ITA is partnering with Virginia Tech to jointly establish a School of Environmental Security. The School will consist of cutting-edge environmental security academic programs, including a proposed new master’s degree to provide students with the skills, tools and techniques for understanding and managing traditional environmental issues. Just in the last month, the resolution to establish the School was passed by University Council, and approval is pending from the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors and State Council for Higher Education in Virginia.
“Leveraging our decade-long successful educational programming in the Center for Leadership in Global Sustainability, we aspire along with ITA to make the world a better place by addressing the rapidly emerging environmental issues that contribute to conflict and instability,” said Paul Winistorfer Dean of the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech. “The new school coupled with our existing center and programs will give us a unique vehicle to move forward.”
“We strive to be at the helm of global environmental security by solving complex world issues for our clients using data and dialogue,” said Melo. “I am excited to see what the future holds as we strive to improve the lives of all people by working towards a secure, stable and sustainable world.”
